Would I be allowed to start a martial arts club at my school, despite having only my blue belt in ITF TKD?

I was thinking of starting a martial arts club at my high school, but I don’t know if there is any sort of specification you need to meet, or if it would even be a good idea! I’ve got my blue belt in ITF Tae Kwon Do, and I’ve been taking Goju-Ryu Karate for a month and a half now.

I was just wondering if there might be some reason for me not to start a club for it, or if I’m just being silly? I would obviously have to find others more qualified than I, but I just need some opinions on the matter! Thank you!
Note: Yes, it would in fact involve the execution of the techniques, not just discussing them and watching Chuck Norris movies (though, I have to admit that that would be pretty cool, haha)

I would be surprised if either school would allow it. I have been a Martial Artist most of my life and know that most don’t allow it until you have made 2nd dan black. 2 local Rec centers would not allow me to teach until I provide proof (certification) of my 2nd dan certificate.

Generally speaking, if a school allows one club on campus they have to allow ANY club on campus. There is no reason why you can’t if there are any clubs at all. If the school said no, that would be discrimination.

You can certainly try. I think, if you can get the proper permission, that you should. However, I doubt you’ll get that permission as the school will likely view it as a huge insurance risk (I know my high school did back in the day) and you’d need permission from your instructors.

It’s likely that they would want a senior student to be present during the classes for the club.

    Good luck!

It depends on what sort of club you want. Do you want a martial arts club that includes actually doing martial arts or just a club that sits in a classroom and talks about it? A club that involves doing activity might be hard because of safety concerns.

First of all you will have to find a teacher that will sponser the club. A teacher has to be their to supervise the club afterschool and provide a room for the club. A lot of teachers don’t want to do this. If you can find a teacher interested in martial arts then you’ll have a easier time.

ITF has regulations concerning opening a franchised club. Also, to teach anything at a high school you need to have proper teaching credentials. In this case its a PE certificate.

The only problem with martial arts in high school is that you would need to make sure you can handle and situation that might arise as far as students getting out of control. You would need to be able to control the room and if your in high school too…that would be difficult. So, as you said…you need somebody older and more qualified with a PE certificate and the high schools permission.
